Thomas, Ian

Published:

Ian Thomas was convicted in October 1994 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in May 1997.

During review, the CCRC obtained new evidence that an individual had reported to the police that they had seen a body at a time and place which were relevant to the investigation.

However, no satisfactory investigation into this sighting was carried out and the matter was not disclosed to the defence despite this evidence being relevant and of assistance to Mr Thomas’ defence.

The CCRC referred the conviction in March 1999.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in March 2002.
