Reynolds, Gary
Gary Reynolds was convicted in November 1987 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.
The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction and sentence in March 2001.
During review, the CCRC obtained new medical evidence indicating that Mr Reynolds was subject to diminished responsibility at the time of the offence as a result of his Asperger’s Syndrome.
Asperger’s Syndrome was not medically recognised at the time of trial and so this defence had not been run.
The CCRC referred the conviction and sentence in March 2002.
The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in July 2004 and Mr Reynolds remained subject to life imprisonment for manslaughter.
