Jonathan Probyn was convicted in March 1994 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.
The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in March 1998.
The main issue at trial was whether Mr Probyn had pushed the his wife’s car into the River Severn whilst she was inside it, or whether she had driven the car into the river.
During review, the CCRC obtained new evidence from an accident reconstruction expert.
The expert’s analysis of debris found on the riverbank gave some support to the case that the car had entered the river at a greater speed than Mr Probyn could have achieved by pushing it.
The CCRC referred the conviction in February 2004.
The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in July 2005.
