Ms Z
Ms Z pleaded guilty in 2022 to multiple counts of cruelty to persons under 16 and received a sentence of six years’ imprisonment. The CCRC received an application to review the sentence in March 2023.
Following review, the CCRC concluded that new medical evidence obtained by the CCRC indicated that Ms Z’s functioning had been impaired during the indictment period, and that there was a connection between her medical condition and offending behaviour.
This new evidence raised a real possibility that the Court of Appeal would find that the sentence of six years’ imprisonment was manifestly excessive.
The CCRC referred the sentence in May 2025.
