Mr T

Published:

Mr T was convicted in November 1993 of attempted rape and burglary with intent to rape. Mr T received a sentence of five years’ imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in May 2000.

Mr T had been convicted on the basis of confession evidence obtained in police interview following intensive questioning.

During review, the CCRC obtained new expert evidence in the form of a psychiatric report in which the expert concluded that they had serious reservations about the reliability of the self-incriminating admissions made by Mr T to the police.

The CCRC also found that Mr T was interviewed without the presence of an appropriate adult and would have been vulnerable in interview.

The CCRC referred the conviction in December 2001.

The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in March 2003.
