Mr FI

Published:

Mr FI was convicted in January 2010 of sexual assault and received a sentence of imprisonment for public protection (IPP) with a notional determinate term of seven years. Mr FI was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in November 2012.

During review, the CCRC uncovered significant new material which affected the reliability of the evidence given by one of the complainants and undermined the prosecution case in relation to both complainants in the case.

This material included 82 contacts between the complainant and police concerning a vast range of criminal and non-criminal behaviour, including allegations of rape. Some of these complaints were demonstrably false.

The CCRC concluded that cumulatively, this new material created a real possibility the Court of Appeal would find Mr FI’s conviction to be unsafe.

The CCRC referred the conviction in January 2016.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in November 2016.
