Mr DZ

Published:

Mr DZ was convicted in October 2008 of rape and received a sentence of ten years’ imprisonment.

An appeal against conviction was dismissed in 2009. The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in May 2010.

Medical evidence of sexual injury had been adduced by the prosecution at trial. During review, the CCRC obtained fresh expert medical evidence indicating that the conclusions of the prosecution’s trial expert were not accurate or justifiable.

The CCRC concluded that in these circumstances, there was a real possibility the Court of Appeal would find Mr DZ’s conviction unsafe.

The CCRC referred the conviction in April 2013.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in April 2014.
