Mr AM
Mr AM was convicted in December 1996 of unlawful wounding, rape, buggery, indecent assault, causing actual bodily harm, and buggery. Mr AM received a sentence of life imprisonment with a specified tariff of 12 years.
In January 2003, the CCRC received an application for review of the sentences for four of the convictions (those carrying life sentences).
Following review, the CCRC determined that when Mr AM was sentenced, no allowance was made for a period of 696 days he had spent on remand in custody whilst awaiting trial.
The CCRC considered that the remand period should have been taken into account by the judge in setting the tariff period and an appropriate adjustment should have been made.
The CCRC referred the sentence in May 2004.
The Court of Appeal reduced the sentence in February 2005.
