Mr AI

Published:

Mr AI was convicted in April 1996 of indecent assault and received a sentence of four years’ imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in February 2001.

The two complainants in the case, both young girls, alleged that Mr AI had committed indecent assaults whilst babysitting them.

They had complained to their stepfather who had then attacked Mr AI.

During review, the CCRC obtained new information that the complainants’ stepfather had himself been convicted of assaults against them.

The nature of these offences bore a strong resemblance to the allegations which had been made against Mr AI.

The assaults had also taken place over the same period of time that Mr AI was said to have assaulted the complainants.

In deposition, the complainants had stated that nobody except Mr AI had ever indecently assaulted them.

The CCRC concluded that proven allegations against the complainants’ stepfather showed this to have been untrue.

The CCRC referred the conviction in May 2001.

The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in February 2003.
