Mr AG

Published:

Mr AG was convicted in June 1996 of indecent assault and conspiracy to commit indecent assault. Mr AG received a sentence of six years’ imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in September 1997.

The complainants in this case, aged 11 and 13 at the time of trial, had named five perpetrators of abuse over the course of their police interviews.

The older complainant had said in reply to a specific question that she had no further allegations to make.

After Mr AG’s conviction, the older complainant made a supplemental statement naming 18 further people who had allegedly sexually abused her.

The prosecuting authorities elected not to bring further charges on the basis of this statement.

Following review, the CCRC considered that the jury at Mr AG’s trial may have taken a different view of the allegations against him had they had a complete picture of the complainant’s allegations.

The CCRC referred the conviction in February 2001.

The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in October 2003.
