McCann, Patrick

Published:

Patrick McCann was convicted in June 1990 of manslaughter and robbery and received a sentence of ten years’ imprisonment.

The CCRC inherited an application for review of the conviction from the Home Office in April 1997.

Following review, the CCRC found that the prosecuting authorities had failed to disclose the medical records of the main prosecution witness to the defence.

Mr McCann had been convicted partly on the evidence of this witness but the medical records, along with new expert evidence obtained by the CCRC, raised substantial doubt as to whether the witness could be considered a reliable witness of truth.

The CCRC referred the conviction in March 1999.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in November 2000.
