Iroegbu, Nwachuku

Published:

Nwachuku Iroegbu was convicted in July 1987 of possession of Class B drugs with intent to supply and received a sentence of three years’ imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in May 1997.

Mr Iroegbu had been convicted partly on the evidence of a police informant.

Following review, the CCRC concluded that information relating to the informant’s role and motives should have been disclosed to the defence as it strengthened the defence case and weakened that of the prosecution.

The failure to do so amounted to a material irregularity.

The CCRC referred the conviction in August 2001.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in July 2003.
