Green, Thomas
Thomas Green was convicted in June 1987 of murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in March 1997.
Following his arrest, Mr Green had been interviewed by police officers 12 times over three days.
After his eighth interview, Mr Green was briefly admitted to hospital as a result of a hypoglycaemic episode.
Mr Green made admissions to the murder in the two interviews which preceded as well as the interview which followed this hospital admission.
Attempts were made at trial to exclude this confession evidence, which was the only evidence against Mr Green.
The CCRC referred the conviction in February 1998 on the basis of new expert medical evidence obtained by the CCRC regarding the effect of the medical episode upon Mr Green’s fitness for interview.
The Northern Ireland Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in March 2002.
