Giacopazzi, Aaron

Published:

Aaron Giacopazzi was convicted in February 1997 of possession of diamorphine, possession of diamorphine with intent to supply, and attempted possession of diamorphine.

Mr Giacopazzi received a sentence of four years’ imprisonment and was ordered to serve a further 12 months of an outstanding term for a previous offence.

The CCRC received an application for review of Mr Giacopazzi’s sentence in April 1998.

Mr Giacopazzi had been convicted of an offence in 1991 and received a sentence of eight years’ imprisonment. He was later released on licence.

On conviction of these further offences, Mr Giacopazzi was given a sentence to run consecutively to a 12-month period believed to represent the remainder of his original sentence.

However, because his sentence ran from the date of his original conviction in 1991, there was in fact no outstanding term.

The CCRC referred the sentence in May 1999.

The Court of Appeal reduced the sentence in July 1999.
