Gaughan, Patrick

Published:

Patrick Gaughan was convicted in March 1983 of aggravated burglary and kidnapping. Mr Gaughan received a sentence of 12 years’ imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in January 1999.

During review, the CCRC considered that the key evidence against Mr Gaughan had come from police informants who were connected to the same robberies and who had since been discredited in several Court of Appeal judgments.

Other evidence had been provided by officers from the West Midlands Police Serious Crime Squad, some of whom had since been significantly discredited and criticised for misconduct and whose evidence had been rejected in a number of Court of Appeal judgments.

The CCRC referred the conviction in April 1999.

The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in January 2001.
