Edwards, Alan
Alan Edwards was convicted in May 1996 of murder and disposing of a corpse to obstruct the coroner. Mr Edwards received a sentence of life imprisonment.
The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in July 2005. Following a provisional decision not to refer, further representations were received in March 2010.
Following review, the CCRC concluded that there had been non-disclosure of information relating to the credibility of a key witness at trial.
The witness had been registered as an informant but the police did not reveal this to the Crown Prosecution Service or prosecution counsel.
The witness had also lied under oath at trial when they had stated that they had never been a police informant.
As a result, Mr Edwards was deprived of important information which may have assisted the defence’s case.
The CCRC referred the conviction in November 2010.
The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in January 2012.
