Dunne, Michael

Published:

Michael Dunne was convicted in March 1983 of robbery and conspiracy to rob. Mr Dunne received a sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in June 1997.

The CCRC considered that much of the evidence against Mr Dunne had come from police informants who were connected to the same robberies and who had been discredited in several judgments of the Court of Appeal.

The informants were in turn handled by police officers from the West Midlands Police Serious Crime Squad.

The Court of Appeal later quashed a number of convictions involving officers from this squad, expressing serious concern at the credibility of their evidence.

Many officers were shown to have fabricated evidence or to have been otherwise corrupt.

The CCRC referred the conviction in June 1998.

The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in January 2001.
