Duggan, John
John Duggan was convicted in December 1984 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.
The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in May 1997.
During review, the CCRC obtained new expert evidence indicating that Mr Duggan was suffering from psychological vulnerabilities at the time of the offence.
The CCRC concluded that there was therefore a real possibility the Court of Appeal would quash the conviction and substitute it for one of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
The CCRC referred the conviction in November 2004.
The Court of Appeal quashed the murder conviction in June 2004 and ordered Mr Duggan to be re-arraigned on a charge of manslaughter.
