Craven, Stephen

Published:

Stephen Craven was convicted in March 1991 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.

The CCRC inherited an application for review of the conviction from the Home Office in March 1997.

The victim had been killed as a result of a “glassing” at a nightclub. Mr Craven denied he was the attacker.

The CCRC referred the conviction in October 1998 because the prosecution had failed to disclose to the defence and court the fact that a fingerprint had been found on the glass which the prosecution identified as the murder weapon. That fingerprint did not match Mr Craven.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in December 2000.
