Amin, Mohammed
Mohammed Amin pleaded not guilty but was convicted of robbery at Peterborough Crown Court in February 2011. He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
He tried to appeal against his conviction but his appeal was dismissed in October 2011. Mr Amin then applied the same month to the CCRC for a review of his conviction.
During review, the CCRC obtained new evidence that potentially undermined the witness identification evidence upon which the prosecution depended at trial. This evidence supported a suggestion that Mr Amin had been wrongly identified by witnesses.
There had also been a failure to disclose important photographs and CCTV footage relevant to the identification evidence at trial. This denied Mr Amin the opportunity to evaluate witnesses and evidence that might have supported the defence case.
In addition, the CCRC considered that the jury had been given inadequate directions by the judge regarding the identification evidence and potential weaknesses within it.
The CCRC referred the conviction in May 2014.
The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in February 2015.
