Ahmed, Mushtaq
Mushtaq Ahmed was convicted in October 2003 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.
The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in October 2008.
At trial, an expert pathologist had given evidence for the prosecution.
Subsequent to the trial, this pathologist was subject to criticism by the Court of Appeal and by professional bodies. The CCRC considered that this undermined their reliability as an expert witness.
The CCRC concluded that had the jury not heard the trial expert’s evidence, they may have reached a different verdict.
The CCRC referred the conviction in March 2010.
The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in December 2010.
