Williams, Dean

Dean Williams was convicted in October 2005 at Maidstone Crown Court for the murder of Mary Malkin and sentenced to life imprisonment.

He appealed against his conviction, but his appeal was dismissed at the Court of Appeal in June 2006. He applied to the CCRC for a review of his case in October 2011.

During review, the CCRC obtained fresh expert psychiatric and medical evidence indicating that at the time of the offence, Mr Williams was suffering from psychiatric vulnerabilities that impaired his responsibility for his actions.

The CCRC considered that this new evidence raised a real possibility that the Court would substitute Mr Williams’ murder conviction with a conviction for manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility.

The CCRC referred the conviction and sentence in September 2012.

The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in December 2013 and ordered a retrial.
