Shickle, Susan

Published:

Susan Shickle was convicted in February 1997 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in May 2001.

Ms Shickle had killed the victim in 1996 by repeatedly stabbing them with a syringe.

Ms Shickle’s defence was denial, with cause of death raised as a separate issue.

During review, the CCRC obtained fresh expert evidence that Ms Shickle suffered from psychiatric vulnerabilities that would have impaired her judgment in defending the case at trial.

The CCRC referred the conviction on this basis in April 2004.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in May 2005.
