Mills, Gary

Published:

Gary Mills was convicted in January 1990 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in March 2002.

Mr Poole had been convicted alongside his co-defendant, Anthony Poole.

The case was covered at the time of trial by a Channel 4 programme which contained criticism of a police officer involved in the investigation of the case.

The defendants had themselves accused this officer of misconduct.

The police officer sued Channel 4 for comments made about him in the programme but judgment was subsequently given against him.

The case came to the CCRC on the basis that matters which had been raised by this libel action provided additional evidence of police misconduct.

The CCRC referred the conviction in May 2002.

The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in June 2003.
