Sharp, Peter

Published:

Peter Sharp was convicted in November 1992 of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. Mr Sharp received a sentence of life imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in March 1998.

Mr Sharp had been accused of shooting his former girlfriend her partner in 1991.

During review, the CCRC obtained new expert psychiatric evidence that at the time of the offences, Mr Sharp had been suffering from psychiatric vulnerabilities as a result of medication he was taking.

The CCRC considered that there was therefore a real possibility the Court of Appeal would find that this substantially diminished Mr Sharp’s responsibility for his actions.

The CCRC referred the conviction in April 2002.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in December 2003.
