Murray, Anne

Published:

Anne Murray was convicted in April 1989 of attempted robbery and received a sentence of two years’ imprisonment with one year suspended on appeal.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in February 1999.

Most of the evidence against Ms Murray at trial had come from a police informant who was subsequently discredited in several judgments of the Court of Appeal.

The informant was in turn handled by police officers from the West Midlands Police Serious Crime Squad.

The Court of Appeal later quashed a number of convictions involving officers from this squad, expressing serious concerns at the credibility of their evidence.

Many officers were shown to have fabricated evidence or to have been otherwise corrupt.

The CCRC referred the conviction in April 2001.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in January 2003.
