Irvine, Patrick
Patrick Irvine was convicted in February 1982 of manslaughter and robbery and received a sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment.
The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction from the Home Office in January 1999.
Subsequent to the trial, one of Mr Irvine’s co-defendants, George Twitchell, had his conviction quashed by the Court of Appeal because police officers who were involved in the case from the West Midlands Police Serious Crime Squad had been significantly discredited as a result of misconduct.
Many of the officers in Mr Twitchell’s case were shown to have fabricated confessions or other evidence in a number of cases.
The Court of Appeal’s judgment meant that Mr Twitchell’s police interviews, which implicated Mr Irvine, would have been inadmissible against all of the defendants in the case.
The CCRC referred Mr Irvine’s conviction in December 2000.
The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in January 2002.
