Cleeland, Paul

Published:

Paul Cleeland was convicted in June 1973 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction in July 1997.

During review, the CCRC obtained new expert firearms evidence which cast substantial doubt on the accuracy and reliability of the expert firearms evidence presented at trial.

This firearms evidence had been key to the prosecution’s case and the CCRC considered that the now unreliable evidence may have had an impact on the decision the jury reached.

The CCRC referred the conviction in November 2000.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in February 2002.
