Jamil, Mohammed Ali

Published:

Mohammed Ali Jamil was convicted in May 1989 of unlawful possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply (heroin). Mr Jamil received a sentence of seven years’ imprisonment.

The CCRC inherited an application for review of the conviction from the Home Office in March 1997.

Following investigation, the CCRC concluded that there had been a failure on the part of the prosecution to disclose relevant material to the defence.

This non-disclosure was relevant to the defence’s contention at trial that certain items had been planted by the police.

In addition, the CCRC found that the exhibits officer in this case, who had been involved in a search of Mr Jamil’s home, had later been required to resign for misconduct.

The CCRC referred the conviction in March 2000.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in July 2001.
