May, Susan

Published:

Susan May was convicted in May 1993 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.

The CCRC inherited an application for review of the conviction from the Home Office in March 1997.

Following review, the CCRC concluded that in the investigation of this case there had been significant breaches of the Police and Crime Evidence Act 1984.

Ms May had been interviewed by the police as a witness when on the evidence available, it was apparent she was being considered as a suspect.

Ms May was also not cautioned during interview and did not receive legal advice.

In addition, the CCRC obtained new expert forensic evidence which cast substantial doubt on both the sufficiency and reliability of the work of the Scenes of Crime Officers involved in the investigation of the case.

The CCRC referred the conviction in November 1999.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in October 2001.
