Haase, John

Published:

John Haase was convicted in March 1993 of conspiracy to supply heroin. Mr Haase received a sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a confiscation order of £6,270 with six months’ imprisonment consecutive in default.

The CCRC inherited an application for review of the conviction from the Home Office in March 1997.

Following review, the CCRC concluded that there was new evidence indicating that the police investigation in Mr Haase’s case had been incompetent.

In addition, the service of evidence from the prosecuting authorities to the defence team had been late and piecemeal. The CCRC considered that this rendered the admission of key pieces of evidence unfair.

The prosecution had also failed to disclose post-charge prison interviews which were relevant to the credibility of the police’s evidence.

The CCRC referred the conviction in August 1999.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in May 2001.
