Gilfoyle, Edward

Published:

Edward Gilfoyle was convicted in July 1993 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.

The CCRC inherited an application for review of the conviction from the Home Office in March 1997.

Mr Gilfoyle claimed the victim had committed suicide.

During review, new expert evidence was obtained concerning the social and psychological factors that could have contributed towards the victim’s suicide.

In addition, since the time of trial an expert prosecution witness had changed their view about the likely cause of death, based on information not available when they made their witness statement.

The CCRC referred the conviction in March 1999.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in December 2000.
