Fannin, Alan

Published:

Alan Fannin was convicted in March 1993 of murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment.

The CCRC inherited an application for review of the conviction from the Home Office in March 1997.

The victim had died as a result of punching injuries inflicted by Mr Fannin. Mr Fannin contended that he had never intended serious bodily harm.

The CCRC referred the conviction in October 1998 on the basis of new expert pathological evidence offering fresh theories as to the cause of fractures to the victim’s skull.

This evidence provided some support to the argument that the punches had not been as forceful as the jury had been led to believe.

The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction in June 1999.
