Cook, Raymond

Published:

Raymond Cook was convicted in March 1996 of aggravated burglary and received a sentence of four and a half years’ imprisonment.

The CCRC received an application for review of the conviction and sentence in July 1997.

Following investigation, the CCRC concluded that Mr Cook’s sentence had been based on a mistaken antecedent record.

The Crown Prosecution Service presented the judge with a list of all Mr Cook’s previous convictions but this contained errors of fact, giving the judge a false impression that Mr Cook had a history of aggravated burglary and had planned this offence. This had led to a higher sentence.

The CCRC referred the sentence in January 1998.

The Court of Appeal reduced Mr Cook’s sentence in February 1998.
